Redecorating can be fun, especially when it’s the most used room in your home. A new kitchen can add tens of thousands of dollars in value to your home when major improvements and upgrades are made. Of course, when it comes to rehab and design, planning does matter. Before ordering a thing, you’ll need to use a kitchen planner to get you started.

Many programs can be found for free online. Certain high end home improvement stores will give you a free DVD to bring home once you put down a deposit on your new cabinets, etc. Others are available to purchase online either by ordering the DVD or you will have access to their website and all your work and plans will be web based. These programs are frequently used by interior designers and architects, and are a bit difficult to use if you don’t have experience with blue prints.

For general use, most of the free programs will give you everything you need. Unless you are doing all the work by yourself, what you really need from this planning software is nothing more than figuring out what your potential kitchen might look like. Most give you blank screens with graph paper which is covered with blue lines in small boxes and a white background.

As you begin your planning phase you will see white paper topped with blue lines to make a graph. You first chore is to assign a scale to the graph. For instance it could be that each block equals an inch and therefore each inch equals a foot. Anyone involved in working on your kitchen will need to fully understand what scale your kitchen will be built at.

Once you have decided on your scale, you then have some general icons to use. Since these programs are usually in Windows or Mac, you can drag and drop these icons onto your floor plan. As you do all this dragging and dropping you will see your kitchen begin to take shape.

Figure out if or where you’d like an island, do you want a sink there, what kind of sink do you want, do you want floor to ceiling cabinets, where is the fridge going, etc.

Your layout at this point is more important than the type of cabinets or the quality of the utility sink. Your contractors will be able to tell you what will work and what won’t.
