Effective Tips For Child Discipline
Raising children is a joy in our lives. There are trying times when our children just will not obey. When this happens the way we react to the situation can determine if we are using effective methods of child discipline that teaches a lesson and steers in a positive direction. If you have tried techniques that are not working, here are a few suggestions.
It is easier for the child to understand and be receptive to discipline if you start at early ages. If you let the years go by without discipline, it adds and leads to behavior problems that are escalated and hard to correct if you wait too long. At that point the child will be resistant and angry.
Some parents look at their cute little child’s face and feels guilty when disciplinary measures are warranted. So, instead they do nothing. When you ignore the situation when the child has done something naughty, you are adding to the problem and their undesirable actions will continue and increase over time. It should be handled as quickly as possible.
Showing children where they went wrong is an important step in practicing effective discipline. Explaining to the child why it was bad and what the consequences may be if it happens again is important. But, on a first offence, teach them responsibility by having them correct their own actions.
A good example would be if the child got into Moms lipstick and used it to write all over the mirror. Explain that you don’t use lipstick on these things, but Moms lips only. Establish rules and expectations and reinforce them. Then take them in the kitchen while you get the bucket of water and cleaning solution ready and explain to them they will help clean it up.
Another tip parents try that is effective is time outs. That will give them time to think about it. Another thought is to have a few books for children that build skills and character and let them read that during their time out.
There are a variety of things you can do in child discipline situations when you are getting to the close to teen years. For 10-12 year old children, they can be disciplined by doing chores. Helping the neighbors wash cars or take trash out on trash day or pull weeds in their yard. For harsher discipline, have the child volunteer to pick up the dog poop in the yard. A little helpful manual labor works better teaching responsibility and accountability. Better than relaxing by going to bed early or not talking on the phone or watching TV.
Lastly, during child discipline always talk to the child in your natural but firm tone. It is not advised to yell or scream. This will bring fear into the child which ultimately will result in them not receiving the message positively. If you are angry, wait a few minutes until you maintain your composure. These tips should help you get positive results when disciplining your children.
