ENT Doctors Treat More Than Just The Ears, Nose, and Throat

Otolaryngologists are specialists in head and neck diseases. These can be surgical or non-surgical and include everything in the head and neck outside of the brain and spinal cord. Surgeons must go through a rigorous at least five year training program after medical school. Hearing complaints are a common problem dealt with by otolaryngologists. Hearing loss, vertigo, tinnitis, ear infections, and facial nerve paralysis can all be due to problems with the ear. Facial plastic surgery is a field of special interest in head and neck surgeons. With an intimate understanding of head and neck anatomy, otolaryngologists are particularly suited to reconstruction of trauma defects or cosmetic surgery to improve the structure and function of the face and nec region. Some surgeons will even complete additional training in cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery.

ENT doctors also treat sinus and allergy conditions. With both surgical and non-surgical treatment options, otolaryngologists are particularly suited to help patients with what can be a particularly troubling condition. Sometimes allergy tests are performed to identifiy allergens. In other patients, a CT scan must be undertaken to identify surgically correctable problems with the sinuses.
