Rosacea: The Hidden Disease In America
Scientists have not been able to determine the cause of rosacea, nor have they been able to find a cure. Most people would be amazed to know that an estimated 14 million people in the United States have rosacea, and many who are in the beginning stages don’t even realize it.
In 50 percent of the patients with rosacea, the eyes are affected. Others suffer from long-term skin problems on their face, neck, back, chest, scalp and ears. The facial area is normally affected the worst.
In the beginning, people with rosacea will have a sensation of constantly blushing or may feel like they are sunburned. Small bumps that look like pimples, watery eyes and swelling around the mouth and other places on the face will also be seen. If you notice that you have these symptoms, make an appointment with your dermatologist right away. Rosacea can be treated if it is diagnosed early.
Being able to control rosacea in a way that will keep it invisible and comfortable is possible if treatment is begun in the early stage. This is the only point in the disease that offers the possibility of stopping its progression.
In the second stage the permanent red skin is similar to the texture of the outside of an orange with its large open pores. Larger bumps or nodules can now be found on the cheeks and nose.
Fortunately the symptoms of rosacea only reach the third level in a small percentage of patients. By this time their face has large, grotesque nodules and their noses become disfigured. The skin is very inflamed. Most of these patients have been in treatment for many years.
You won’t believe this, but the people who are most likely to be affected by rosacea are adults between the ages of 30 and 50. The majority will also have blue eyes, blonde hair and a lighter skin color. In spite of these statistics, children and people with any color of skin can also be affected. Interestingly enough, rosacea is often passed on in families. Women are affected more often than men, but men experience more severe forms of the disease.
Can you imagine a disease deforming your face to the place that you would have virtually no self-esteem and barely no self-confidence? The disease is so bad that many avoid other people and refuse to take part in social engagements of any type. It is very obvious that their jobs would suffer, and they would be tempted to stay home in order to avoid interacting with fellow workers. In many cases, the psychological effects of rosacea are worse than the outward symptoms.
