How Does A Toilet Work And What Are Their Problems ?

Toilet is an important part of house. Normally for using toilet you just need to know how the flush system works. But to solve simple problems of a toilet, you need not to call a plumber. You can solve the problems yourself just by having basic knowledge of toilet working.

The main components of a toilet are a tank, a bowl, a handle, a trip lever, ball-cock, a stopper and flush-valve assembly. In case any one of these components fails to work then whole process gets disturbed and your toilet flush system stops working.

Normally, flush handle is connected to the trip lever. With the application of force this handle moves up the chain or vertical rod which is further connected to a stopper. As a result stopper is also moved up and causes the water to run via flush valve and like this water flows to flush valve and after that it goes to toilet bowl from flush ports.

In all this, gravity plays a major role as due to gravitational force only water goes into bowl and then into the drainpipe. Generally, in a single flush the water present in tank finishes out. After the tank gets emptied, stopper again sets back to its flush valve seat and float ball goes at the bottom of the tank and tank start filling again.

When water comes to the toilet, water level rises. With the rise in the water level, float ball also rises. Once the float ball reaches a certain height it turns off the flow of water to the bowl. In case of some problem, the water may not stop from running. This water is then redirected from the tank to the overflow tube and then into the toilet bowl. Such toilets are referred as a running toilet.

This running toilet could be caused due to several reasons but in general the main cause for it is height of float arm. If the float arm rises up to an unsuitable height, it causes the leakage in toilet. To get free from this problem turn down the float arm.

Other cause could be displacement of stopper from flush valve seat. To get rid of this problem, clean the stopper and repair the flush valve seat.

Some more common problems of a toilet can be caused due to crack in overflow tube or any defect in ball-cock valves. The most effective solution for such problems is replacement of these defective parts as repairing could cost you little high. Older ball-cock device usually do not have anti-siphon feature, so try to replace them with new ball-cock having anti-siphon features.
