What Do Jehovah’s Witnesses Teach about Death and the Resurrection?~What is Death and What is the Hope of the Resurrection?~Jehovah’s Witnesses Beliefs about Death and Resurrection
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that death is like a sleep. That the soul is not immortal but mortal, and that one dies, he ceases to exist. They believe, from their understanding of the Bible, that the hope for the dead is that of a resurrection, rather than that of an immortal soul passing on to another life. What the resurrection means, is, for those who go to have, a new body, a spiritual one, to live forever with God and Christ in heaven, to fulfill a special role there in God’s purposes, what Revelation 5:9,10, and Revelation 20:5,6 refers to in terms of serving as “kings and priests”. For the majority of mankind, including many of those who might be considered “unrighteous,” as was the evildoer who was impaled next to Jesus, it will mean a resurrection to an earthly paradise. This will no doubt be true of many who may have died ignorant of the Bible and the ransom sacrifice of Jesus, who will be given another opportunity for life.
These are some scriptures that highlight the beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses as expressed above:
Genesis 2:7 – “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Man was not given a soul, but was a soul himself.
Ezekiel 18:4 – “Behold, all souls are Mine. As the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is Mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” 21st Century King James Version – The soul is mortal.
Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 – “For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.” New International Version (UK)
Psalms 146:3,4 – “Put not your trust in princes, Nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; In that very day his thoughts perish.” American Standard Version
John 11:11,44 – After he said this, he said also, `Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I am going to wake him up. When he had said this, he shouted, `Lazarus, come out!’ ‘Out came the dead man! The cloth that they had buried him in was tied around his hands and feet. Another small cloth was tied around his face. Jesus said to the people, `Take off the cloths and free him!’” Worldwide English New Testament.
John 5:28,29 – “Don’t be surprised! The time will come when all of the dead will hear the voice of the Son of Man, and they will come out of their graves. Everyone who has done good things will rise to life, but everyone who has done evil things will rise and be condemned.” Contemporary English Version. Acts 24:15 – “And I have a hope in God, which these men themselves also accept, that there is going to be a resurrection, both of the righteous and the unrighteous.” Holman Christian Standard Bible.
