There simply is no way I’d be letting you on my offshore drilling rig if you don’t know how to swim. You tell me, what happens in the case of an emergency. I don’t care if you are an engineer or a cook. On my rig you have got to be a first-rate swimmer. Otherwise, if a freak gale suddenly blew you off the rig into the water, no one else might be able to get to you on time.

When seeking employment on an offshore drilling rig, you might want to be particular about the rig you are interested in, and what they do there. That might influence what is to be expected of you, and what you need to have on your resume. Mostly, it’s drilling though, so pucker up.

My brother works on an offshore drilling rig somewhere in the tropics. The jobs seemed kind of easy – there weeks on and three weeks off – until I paid him a visit. He told me I even got lucky to be allowed out there. When I saw how much work they had to do, I changed my mind about following in his footsteps.

The first is your professional qualifications; the second is your state of health; and the third be your ability to swim. Indeed there is no compromising on these things. If for some reason all three are not there, there’s simply no way you’ll be getting the job.

You need to be the responsible type if you are going to be working on an offshore oil drilling rig. You certainly do have your own job description, but you also will need to have a hang on everyone else’s jobs. It is planned to be that way as a sort of fail safe rearrangement. Relief might not come fast enough if someone or something fails, and then you might have to fill in for a minute, a second, or an hour. It is critical that you know what to do about it in a hurry.

If you get seasick, you can’t work on an offshore oil drilling rig. Put simply, you’d cave at a time when you are needed the most. You could be the most brilliant person, if you can’t stomach the waves you are no good out there on the rig.

Offshore jobs, especially those out at sea, embody certain qualities. I am speaking of the kind of offshore job you do on an oil drilling rig. You have to be able to maintain calm in the face of a storm and professionalism at all times; and this is only mentioning a few of the needed qualities. You should acquaint yourself with all of these if you are looking to get into that line of work.
