Why You Can’t Lose Weight

The number one cause of obesity is overeating and lack of exercise. In other words, people gain weight when they eat more than they burn off simple, right? Not quite. Sometimes people diet and exercise and they still do not find themselves loosing much weight. This is a red flag, telling you to do a bit more research as to exactly why you are gaining weight or why you can’t lose weight.

There are many factors that are involved in diagnosing your ability to lose weight properly. That is why you should always talk to a health care provider and have them run a few tests to see what is going on. For right now I can educate you on some of the reasons why people can’t lose weight.

Hypothyroidism is probably the most common factor found in people who are overweight. Hypothyroidism can be described as deficiency of the thyroid hormone and this in turn can reduce the metabolism of food, resulting in loss of appetite and modest weight gain. The weight gain occurs because of fat accumulation and fluid retention caused by protein deposits in the body. Some symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, lethargy, swelling of the face, puffy eyes, dry skin, decreased sweating, poor memory, slow speech and husky voice, weakness, intolerance to cold and headache.

Deficiency of essential fatty acid is another reason why people sometimes can not lose weight. Essential fatty acids are good fats that maintain the body’s metabolic rate and are required by the body to produce hormones. Cravings for mostly fatty foods is a symptom of deficiency of essential fatty acids. However some early signs can be dandruff, dry hair, and dry, scaly skin. This deficiency is also associated with problems like arthritis, eczema, heart disease, diabetes, and premenstrual syndrome.

Something else that is sometimes the cause of weight gain is food sensitivity. This is when you get certain symptoms after eating a certain food, it is possible that reactions to food are not immediate.Hours after eating, symptoms like bloating, and swelling in the hands, feet, ankles, abdomen, chin, and around the eyes, can appear. Much of the weight gained is fluid retention, which occurs due to inflammation and the release of certain hormones. Also, fermentation of food, especially carbohydrates, in the intestines, can cause gas and a swollen belly.

Cushing’s Syndrom is a disorder that is caused because of excess amounts of a hormone, called cortisol. With this problem fat accumulates in the face, abdomen, and upper back, while the arms and legs usually stay small and slender. Other symptoms of this are muscle wasting and weakness, thin skin, poor wound healing, easy bruising, high blood pressure, glucose intolerance, stretch marks on the abdomen, menstrual irregularities, and hair loss in women.

Another thing that is known to cause some weight gain can be certain prescription drugs. Any oral contraceptives containing estrogen or hormone replacement can cause fluid retention and increased appetite. Steroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antidepressants, and diabetic medications are some other drugs that can cause problems with weight.

Emotional eating can also have an effect on your weight, especially in addition to stress or depression. Even if signs of stress are not evident, eating excessively because of stress can still be a factor.

Blood sugar imbalance is when the intake of refined carbohydrates brings on quick variations in blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels are low, as in this case, there are cravings for more sweets.

These are only a few of the more popular reasons for obesity. All diseases are not always accompanied by symptoms, thus making it impossible to know that you have it. These conditions or any others should always be talked about with a health care professional before taking any steps to cure the problem. It is very important that you do talk to your health care provider before taking it upon yourself. This is of course to protect your health.
