Boating Safety Information
Before you even think of taking your brand new vessel out for a cruise on the water it is in your own best interest to undergo a boat safety class and have a boat safety inspection to check for the required safety devices. The US Coast Guard can provide you with a list of required and proposed boat safety equipment.
Life jackets, or personal drifting tools as they are officially called, should be easily available for every passenger of the boat. They should also be conformed to the size of the individual who is meant to wear them in case of an emergency. They must be in good working condition including all the straps and clips situated properly and usable. It is a great suggestion to have them fitted to the persons so that if required they can be worn without much further adjusting. In a number of states there is a minimum age for which the wear of a life jacket is required every time.
As a large factor of boating safety there should also be present on board a recently checked fire extinguisher. It must be clearly marked so that anybody can locate it if necessary and reach for it in time. There are different types of fire extinguishers, created to put out different kinds of fires. For boating safety it is advisable to obtain a Type B or C fire extinguisher, these are designed for tackling fires originated or fuelled by oil, grease and gas, or electrical fires.
As a last part of boating safety, especially for boats with gasoline engines and specifically when the engine is mounted in the boat, proper wind circulation is important.
Not only to avoid any development of carbon monoxide, threatening the crew with toxic conditions, but also to prevent gasoline smoke from building up and becoming a dangerous fire hazard.
